This chart shows the basic phonemes of American and Canadian English to aid with teaching pronunciation. The phonetic symbols used in the chart to represent sounds are from the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Note that, for simplicity, only diphthongs that have no similar single vowel sound are included. Also note that pronunciation varies widely by region and that there are many different ways to transcribe phonemes.
